The 1000 dollar bill is no longer in circulation, but it remains and exciting and enigmatic rarity. The last high-denomination bills were printed on December 27, 1945.
Mostly used by banks and the federal government, the Federal Reserve began actively removing the thousand dollar bill from circulation and destroying them, along with all high-denomination currency in 1969.
As of May, 2009, only 165,372 $1,000 bills were known to exist.
