The date is historic. 1871 was the date of the creation of the German Empire. It was in that year that the King of Prussia was proclaimed emperor of Germany. The coin commemorates victory over France. There is another one dated 1866 that commemorates victory over Austria. As you can image the period was one of tremendous change and upheaval in Europe.
